Our History


1894 - Free public library services in Breathitt County with the Kentucky Federation of Women's Club effort known as the Traveling Library project which sent book boxes to places in Kentucky.

1930 - February 5- Breathitt County Library purchased the old Hargis Commercial Bank Building on Main Street.

1967 -Voters overwhelmingly approved the creation of the Breathitt County Public Library Taxing District.

1972 - The Library purchases the Red Reynolds' Ford Dealership and moves to College Avenue.

2004 -The Breathitt County Public Library begin the planning of a future building project.

2012 - The Breathitt County Public Library Board purchases the College Avenue Building of Hazard Community and Technical College. This is now known the Library Annex building.
